Noninvasive Body Sculpting with Cold Light (UltraSlim)

Many patients have presented to my office complaining of areas of body fat that have been  resistant to diet and exercise (also known as lipodysmorphia).

This resistant fat tends to accumulates in different body regions of men and women. In men, areas involved include: the abdomen; flanks; and breasts (gynecomastia).  In women, areas where fat accumulations are found include: the abdomen; waist; flanks, thighs; midback near the bra line; and arms. All of these are regions where fat also accumulates during pregnancy. Also,  as one ages, hormones and activity change which lead to more fat accumulation.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over 1/3 of adults are obese and over 2/3 are overweight.  The World Health Organization estimates that worldwide over 2.1 billion adults are obese (as defined as a body mass index above 30).  With this incidence the need for fat reduction is urgent.

Diet, exercise , and surgery (liposculpture; smartlipo) have been used, and have been successful for many. For others, resistant areas remain in spite of diet and exercise, and invasive procedures are not possible.  They may not have the time for a surgical procedure and recovery, they may not be candidates for an invasive procedure due to health concerns, and they may be apprehensive of invasive procedures. They also request that any procedure used to be comfortable and require minimal post procedure care.

Many methods have been tried in attempted  noninvasive fat removal over the past several years. Unfortunately most of these do not offer immediate fat dimensional reduction, have some risk, and may result in temporary morbidity and pain. Some provide inconsistent results, and others results take several months before they are seen.  Ultra Slim, based on cold light body sculpting created a more user friendly, robust model!  One sees initial  results as early as the first treatment. The procedure is relatively short (averaging 32 minutes), and there is no discomfort. Ultra Slim is the only non-invasive technology with FDA approval for immediate, permanent fat removal without dieting, exercise, pills, or surgery (K160880). UltraSlim cold light body sculpting achieved significant clinical results for 100% of patients in a preapproval FDA study. (NCT02867150).In multi-site IRB approved clinical trials patients lost an average of 3.5” (1.6 liters of fat) from their waist, hips, and thighs.

How does this Ultra Slim cold sculpting body contouring work? Studies of the Ultra Slim cold light body contouring confirm shrinkage of fat cells by permitting the escape of triglycerides (a form of fat storage molecule found in the adipose-fat cell) out of the cells. These pass through the lymphatic system and are metabolized by the liver (producing energy). This is analogous to a balloon deflating as air is let out.  As the fat storage leaves the cells, the cells deflate (shrink).

Treatments take 30 minutes for the waist region.  There is no discomfort and one can resume normal activity immediately.

So far, my experience in treatment has been that more women (80%) than men (20%) sought treatment. The ideal candidate has a body mass index of 30 or less although there are some with a higher BMI that may be candidates depending on their health status, areas of lipodysmorphia, and goals. Patients have included: women who gained weight during pregnancy and cannot get to a comfortable clothing size (nearer to their prepregnancy size); those who gained weight over the winter; those who were unable to exercise normally due to health problems; men with injuries keeping them from their normal exercise; men with male breast development (gynecomastia).
