Dr. Robert Burke discusses Kybella, an alternative to liposuction or surgery for nonsurgical chin fat reduction.

Kybella, an injectable substance that dissolves fat under the chin was just approved by the FDA for non-surgical double chin fat reduction. Until now, fat reduction under the chin took an invasive procedure (liposuction or surgery). With this, treatments are anticipated to take approximately 5 minutes each, and involve injections in the upper neck region under the chin. No surgery, and minimal recovery.
Kybella works by destroying fat cells. It is identical to deoxycholic acid (a substance your body makes naturally) which helps absorb fats. The drug destroys the fat cell’s membrane, causing it to burst. What remains of the fat cell is absorbed back into the body via normal metabolic pathways.

Researchers believe that because the fat cells are actually destroyed, results will be long-lasting or even permanent. In studies, patients saw the changes last for at least two years.
This approach to reducing a double chin with injections rather than more invasive surgery is part of a growing trend at the Michigan Center for Cosmetic Surgery of noninvasive and minimally invasive cosmetic treatment options.
I am excited about this product and anticipate being able to offer treatments to my patients as soon as it is commercially available. It will offer them a long awaited, clinically effective nonsurgical option.
